Dave Sherwood is an award-winning journalist and photographer based in San Jose, Costa Rica. Over the past two years, he has covered such issues as the future of renewable energy in Central America, the fate of Costa Rica's most remote wildlife refuges, the decline of tropical fisheries in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and the increasing pressures of the pet trade on endangered species.
Dave's specialty is environment and natural history reporting, a passion he developed through hunting and fishing in his native New England. These sports - which require the most intricate understanding of fish and wildlife in their native habitats - inspired his love for all things outdoors and allow him a unique perspective as a reporter.
Dave is a regular contributor to The New York Times, National Geographic News, The Miami Herald, The Weather Channel, Audubon Magazine and The Christian Science Monitor, among others. He is a regional correspondent for Eco-Americas and writes the fishing column for The Tico Times in Costa Rica. He also helps write, produce and field-research educational outreach documentaries on environmental issues throughout Latin America for the Costa Rica-based non-profit CAVU.
This year, he has set a goal to visit all 24 of Costa Rica's national parks with his wife, Grace, see 300 new species of birds and (finally!) land a baby tarpon in a secret lagoon near the Panama border.
Dave is also a United States Coast Guard-licensed Captain and a saltwater fly-fishing guide in Maine's Casco Bay from June to September.
