Mining Country

Bruce Babbit, former Secretary of the Interior under Bill Clinton, and James Hider of the Times of London, chat alongside a pair of local men in a small town between Quincemil and Mazuko in the Peruvian Amazon. This town is likely to be flooded if Peruvian government plans to create an enormous hydro-project go forward. The project, which would produce more power than all of Costa Rica's projects combined, would also wipe out a hugely biodiverse area. Power-hungry (no pun intended) Brazil would receive most of the electricity but avoid the environmental damage. Peruvian Enviromentalists like Enrique Ortiz are calling for a closer look.
